Privacy Policy

Effective June 30, 2026

The short version

Tater analyzes your email on your own device. We never read, store, or send the contents of your emails to our servers or anyone else. The browser extension works without an account.

1. Who we are

Tater (“Tater,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) provides a browser extension and website that help people recognize and avoid email scams. This Privacy Policy explains what information we handle and how we protect it.

2. How Tater analyzes email

The Tater browser extension scans the emails you view in supported webmail services (such as Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and Outlook) to look for patterns commonly used in scams and phishing. This analysis happens entirely within your browser, on your device.

We do not send the contents of your emails to our servers, and we do not store your email contents anywhere outside your own browser. The analysis is performed locally and in real time.

3. Information stored on your device

To do its job, the extension keeps a small amount of information in your browser’s local storage. This stays on your device and is not sent to us:

  • Senders you have chosen to trust (so we stop warning you about them).
  • Your preferences and settings for the extension.
  • A random, anonymous installation identifier used only if you turn on the optional dashboard sync described below.

4. Optional dashboard sync (off by default)

Tater offers an optional feature that lets you (or a family member) see protection activity in a web dashboard. This feature is turned off by default. It only sends data if you explicitly turn it on in the extension settings and provide a dashboard address.

When enabled, the extension sends metadata only — never the body or contents of your emails. Specifically, it may send:

  • The sender's name/address and the subject line of a flagged message.
  • A risk score, risk level (safe, caution, suspicious, dangerous), and scam category.
  • Labels for the patterns detected (for example, "urgency" or "gift card request").
  • The type of action involved (for example, a link warning or reply warning) and a timestamp.
  • The extension version and a random, anonymous installation identifier.

The message body and any excerpts are never transmitted. You can turn this feature off at any time in the extension’s popup settings, which stops all syncing.

5. Information you give us on our website

If you join our early-access list or contact us through our website, we collect the information you choose to provide — such as your name, email address, optional company, and your areas of interest. We use this to contact you about Tater, send updates you requested, and improve the product.

6. Browser permissions

The extension requests permission to run on supported webmail sites so it can read the email currently on your screen and show warnings. It requests permission to use local storage to save your settings and trusted senders. It does not request access to your browsing on other websites.

7. How we share information

We do not sell your personal information. We share data only:

  • With service providers that host our website and store waitlist sign-ups on our behalf, under confidentiality obligations.
  • If you enable dashboard sync, with the dashboard address you configured (which may be operated by you or your family).
  • When required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users or the public.

8. Data retention

Information stored on your device remains there until you remove it, clear your browser data, or uninstall the extension. Waitlist and contact information is kept until you ask us to delete it or it is no longer needed for the purpose you provided it.

9. Your choices and rights

  • You can disable or uninstall the extension at any time.
  • You can keep dashboard sync turned off (it is off by default) or turn it off later.
  • You can ask us to access or delete the information you provided on our website by emailing privacy@asktater.com.

10. Children's privacy

Tater is intended for adults and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

11. Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the limited information we handle. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but keeping email analysis on your device means the most sensitive data — your email contents — never leaves it.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Effective” date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice.
