We’re here to help
Whether you’re using the free extension, joining Closed Beta with a personalized setup link, or need help after a scary message — start here. Email analysis runs on your device; we do not need your inbox contents to answer most questions.
How to contact support
Email support@asktater.com. We read every message. For privacy questions, use privacy@asktater.com.
Please include (when relevant):
- What you were trying to do, and what went wrong.
- Browser (for example, Chrome) and whether you are on desktop.
- For Closed Beta: the Version and Build lines from the extension popup (for example, Version 1.0.0-beta.3 and the Build SHA shown in the popup).
- Screenshots of the Tater popup or warning panel only — please avoid sending full email threads with personal or financial details.
Known issues
We keep this list short and honest. It will grow as we learn from Closed Beta and everyday use.
- Closed Beta only. Invited testers may see a Closed Beta badge in the extension popup. That build is for moderated validation and is not a public production release.
- Not every scam is caught. Tater looks for common patterns. Always pause and verify independently for money, passwords, gift cards, or remote-access requests.
- Supported webmail only. The extension works on listed webmail sites (Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook/Hotmail, AT&T Mail). It is not a full desktop email client scanner. See Supported Apps.
- Some legitimate messages may look concerning. Education, escrow, and continuity language can occasionally score higher than expected. Use the warning as a pause — not a verdict — and verify through official channels you already trust.
- Corporate Chrome policies can block Web Store installs. If Add to Chrome fails, try a personal Chrome profile or contact your IT admin.
Closed Beta setup
If Jeffrey invited you to Tater Closed Beta, you should have a personalized link that looks like asktater.com/beta/setup?t=…. Use that link — you do not need to type a participant ID.
- Open your personalized setup link in desktop Chrome (not a phone or tablet browser).
- Install Ask Tater (Closed Beta) from the Chrome Web Store when the page asks you to (keep the setup tab open or bookmark it). If the store says “This item is not available,” you are likely on mobile — switch to a computer.
- Return to the setup page and choose Finish setup.
- Open Gmail, Yahoo Mail, or Outlook on the same desktop browser. Tater watches webmail in the browser — it does not protect the phone mail apps in this beta.
- Do not share your personalized setup link publicly. If it stops working, email support@asktater.com or contact Jeffrey for a new one.
Closed Beta feedback
If you were invited to Tater Closed Beta, thank you. Honest feedback — including “I would ignore this” or “this felt accusing” — helps us improve.
- During a moderated session: tell your facilitator what you see and how it feels. You do not need to give the “right” answer.
- Outside a session: email support@asktater.com with subject line Closed Beta feedback. Include the Version and Build from the popup.
- Confirm you are on the correct build: popup should show Closed Beta, Version 1.0.0-beta.3, and Build a202d32 (or the build your facilitator confirmed). If those lines do not match, stop and email support before continuing.
FAQ
Does Tater send my email contents to your servers?
No by default. Scanning runs locally in your browser. Optional dashboard sync (off by default) can send metadata such as sender, subject, and risk score — not the full message body. Details are in our Privacy Policy.
Is Closed Beta the same as the public product?
No. Closed Beta is for invited participants and research sessions. It is not the public product. Always verify the popup shows Closed Beta, Version 1.0.0-beta.3, and Build a202d32 (unless your facilitator told you otherwise).
Do I need to enter an HDV or participant ID?
No. Your personalized setup link connects your browser for you. If someone asks you to type an ID into the website, stop and contact Jeffrey or support@asktater.com.
How do I uninstall the extension?
Open chrome://extensions, find Tater (or Ask Tater Closed Beta), and choose Remove.
What should I do if I think I was scammed?
Pause. Do not send more money or codes. See Help — I Got Scammed for practical next steps, and contact your bank or card issuer if money may already be moving.
